A Spring Living Room Refresh with Plants

As the winter chill slowly gives way to the warmth of spring, it's time to finally say goodbye to the cosy winter vibes and welcome in the freshness of the new season. With a few simple styling elements, you can breathe new life into your space, ensuring it reflects the spirit of renewal.

In this article, I’ll talk through some of the simple changes we’ve made to the drawing room to make way for seasonal changes. You can also watch the video where I talk through the updates made.

On our drink station, which is nestled on the built-in alcove shelves – I’ve swapped out the dark and earthy amber glass for clear glass to introduce a lighter touch. The glasses are simple and elegant in shape but I particularly love the beautiful vintage brandy glasses given to us by my mother-in-law as they add a touch of nostalgia and charm.

I’ve replaced two brown velvet cushions and the chocolate wool throw with lighter alternatives. A green gingham cushion, and a striped, red cushion that injects a little dot of colour and a neutral wool throw give a nice balance. It’s still pretty chilly at the moment so blankets are still necessary.

Now, let's talk about the real stars of the show – the plants. While tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths are classic spring blooms, I’ve opted to extend the vibrancy into summer by introducing a beautiful stone planter. Inside, I’m nurturing young Lily of the Valley, promising delightful blossoms in the coming weeks. With the room being south-facing, the ample sunlight creates an ideal environment for these plants to thrive.

Another botanical addition are aged terracotta pots housing graceful asparagus ferns. The nature-inspired charm of its sweeping leaves brings a touch of the wild indoors, perfectly complementing the season. I’ve placed vintage side plates beneath the pots which not only adds a decorative element but also ensures easy maintenance by capturing any excess water.

And with a few cuttings from the garden, I’ve filled a small vase with hellebores, forming a delightful trio with the planter and asparagus fern. The juxtaposition of these elements creates a beautiful cluster that adds life to the room, which is so different to the dried bracken I had in here before.

This is what the room was like styled for winter, with brown amber glass and dried bracken. By adding a few small touches has really given it a refreshing mood.

I will be relocating this botanical trio to our console table on warmer days, allowing passersby to enjoy the sight of our flourishing plants while letting them bask in the sunlight for growth. It’s amazing that with a few small swaps and the introduction of some plants and blooms not only transforms the room but also brings the beauty of the outdoors in.

I’ve included a ‘Shop the Look’ section below if you’d like to create a similar look this Spring.
